Freemasonry: Here are prominent Ghanaians who are also Freemasons

Following the appointment of Ghana’s former president, John Agyekum Kufuor as a Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE), some Ghanaians who appeared shocked have begun wondering which other prominent personalities in the country are Freemasons.
The popular belief is that many influential personalities, thanks to their success, belong to the group.
    But what is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is one of the world’s largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organisations.
Its members come from all walks of life and meet as equals whatever their faith, ethnic group or position in society.
Raising funds largely through voluntary donations, supporting individual members, local communities and global emergencies are their main objectives.
Public declaration of membership is optional.
But which prominent persons in Ghana belong to this group?
Pulse.com.gh has put together a list of some of them.
    Otumfuo Osei Tutu II
The Asantehene is a well known member of the Freemasons.
    Dr Alex Tweneboah
The ex-President of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA) is a well known Freemason. He however made the wrong kind of headlines when he was arrested for being involved in a simbox fraud. He was expelled from the group following his arrest.
Otwasuom Osei Nyampong VI (Kamenahene of the Akwamu)
The Grand master of the Grand Lodge of Ghana, the man known in private life as Yaw Adjei has been a staunch advocate in demystifying the brotherhood’s activities in Ghana.
    Prof. Christopher Ameyaw-Ekumfi
The current Board Chairman of the Ghana Infrastructural Investment Fund belongs to the highly respected society.
    Henry Martey Newman
John Henry Martey Newman, a Ghanaian Historian, Administrator, and Lawyer and was also the Chief of Staff of Ghana under President John Atta Mills.
    Alexander Afenyo Markin
Afenyo Markin is the current Member of Parliament for the Efutu Constituency and also a lawyer.
He stated on Starr FM in April 2016 that he is a Freemason.
“I am a mason and I have not been sanctioned by the Catholic Church. Freemasonry is a fraternal society that believes in God Almighty and follows certain principles that guide a man’s life and it does not run counter with my believes as a catholic. President Kufuor is a mason and a catholic,” he stated.
